Season of the Witch: 8 Low-key Ways to Wear the Witch Aesthetic

Getting witchy with it.

Getting witchy with it.

I find the mythology of witches fascinating.

If you think about what caused women throughout history to be accused and persecuted as witches, it's hard not to be drawn to what they represented. Women labeled as witches were labeled as such because they were strong-willed, intelligent, and strayed from social norms.

As women, we're all fighting in our own personal rebellions in varying degrees. It could be something as relatively small as pushing the dress code envelope at a job or school that enforces arbitrary rules tinged with age-old sexism.

Or it could be something as huge as demanding to be paid as much as your male colleague who does your same job or else you quit. Or maybe you want to share a video of your kid playing in the backyard without getting mom-shamed online.

Some of my own witchy items. I mean, that necklace looks like a talisman that can straight up cast spells right?

Whatever your own personal rebellion is, I find that playing with the witch aesthetic (even subtly) can feel like a small act of empowerment.

It's a visual statement that expresses what persecuted "witches" throughout history embodied: free thinking, free spirited, creative, strange, badass women. The Moda Misfits throughout the ages, if you will. Luckily, at least for the time being, none of us are at risk of being burned at the stake for asserting our individuality. Let's hope it stays that way. (cue sinister Handmaids Tale music.)

On that dark note, buckle up your broomsticks, ladies.  I have some cute, low-key ways to wear the witch aesthetic linked below!

These pieces are subtle enough that you won't feel like you're wearing a witch costume. It's all about capturing a witchy vibe while still feeling comfortable at work, school, or the grocery store. I also like how the slight pink hues in the quartz necklace and the sunglasses (both of which I happen to own and love) soften up the look.

This is me before heading to work this past summer, exhibiting a small act of defiance against the summer heat by dressing like a witch.
